This is Penrose's second year leading the Wildcat athletic department. Prior to becoming the athletic director, he spent three years as an assistant principal in the front office, overseeing the junior class. During his first 18 years at Lawrence North, he taught math, teaching anything from pre-algebra to honors pre-calculus classes, and coached swimming & baseball. Mike has spent his entire educational career at Lawrence North High School.
A graduate of New Castle High School in 1989, he set several club and high school records as a Trojan swimmer. He graduated from Butler University in 1994, receiving his B.S. in Mathematics Education. While at Butler he played rugby and competed on the Bulldog swim team, setting a school record in the 200 freestyle relay. He received his M.A.E. from Ball State University in Educational Administration and Supervision in 2012.
Penrose began his coaching career under the guidance of Coach John Diercks, serving as his assistant for 6 years before taking over the reigns as head coach of the Wildcat swim team in 2000. During his 12-year stint as head coach for both the boys and girls, his teams won 3 Marion County championships and 7 sectional titles. He and his staff produced 18 All-Americans and 19 Academic All-Americans. He was recognized by his fellow coaches as sectional coach of the year 7 times and Marion County coach of the year 11 times. In 2008, he received the prestigious St. Vincent Integrity Coach of the Year Award. Penrose was active in state-wide leadership while coaching, serving various organizations and working closely with the IHSAA. He served as President of the IHSSCA from 2004—2008 and Vice-President of the Indiana High School Swimming & Diving Hall of Fame from 2005—2009. Not only a swim coach, Penrose was an assistant with the baseball team under Coach Richard Winzenread in his early years at LN.
Personally, Mike and his wife Joy have lived in Lawrence Township for over 20 years. They have two children who have grown up in Lawrence Township Schools, both are now students at Lawrence North High School; Emma is a senior and Jacob is a sophomore. A native of the Pittsburgh area, he enjoys cheering for the Steelers and Pirates, attending all kinds of sporting events, golf, hiking, watching his children participate in their respective activities, and traveling with his family.
