Mr. Penrose has led the Athletic Department since 2014.  He began his career in education at Lawrence North High School in 1994.  During his first 18 years at Lawrence North, he taught math, teaching anything from pre-algebra to honors pre-calculus classes, and coached swimming & baseball.  From 2012-2014, he served as an assistant principal, overseeing the junior class.

A graduate of New Castle High School in 1989, he set several club and high school records as a Trojan swimmer.  He graduated from Butler University in 1994, receiving his B.S. in Mathematics Education.  While at Butler he played rugby and competed on the Bulldog swim team, setting a school record in the 200 freestyle relay.  He received his M.A.E. from Ball State University in Educational Administration and Supervision in 2012.

Penrose began his coaching career as his assistant swim coach for 6 years before taking over the reigns as head coach of the Wildcat swim team in 2000.  During his 12-year stint as head coach for both the boys and girls, his teams won 3 Marion County championships and 7 sectional titles.  He and his staff produced 18 All-Americans and 19 Academic All-Americans.  He was recognized by his fellow coaches as Sectional Coach of the Year 7 times and Marion County Coach of the Year 11 times. In 2008, he received the prestigious St. Vincent Integrity Coach of the Year Award.  Penrose was active in state-wide leadership while coaching, serving various organizations and working closely with the IHSAA.  He served as President of the IHSSCA from 2004—2008 and Vice-President of the Indiana High School Swimming & Diving Hall of Fame from 2005—2009.  Not only a swim coach, Penrose was an assistant with the baseball team under Coach Richard Winzenread in his early years at LN.

During Penrose's tenure as Lawrence North Athletic Director, Lawrence North has received the 2016 NCAA TeamWorks Community Service Champion Award, the 2017 Crossroads Officials Association Sportsmanship Award, the 2018 IHSAA Sportsmanship Award, and the National Athletic Trainer's Association Safe Sports School "1st Team" recognition for 2018-2021.

Personally, Mike and his wife Joy have lived in Lawrence Township for over 25 years.  They have two children who have graduated from Lawrence Township Schools; Emma, a 2017 LN grad, attends Purdue University.  Jacob, a 2019 LN grad, attends Wabash College where he is a member of the swim team.

A native of the Pittsburgh area, Mr. Penrose enjoys cheering for the Steelers and Pirates, attending all kinds of sporting events, golfing, hiking, watching his children participate in their respective activities, and traveling with his family.
