2017 Season in Review

Lawrence North captured its first IHSAA sectional championships since 1978, defeating Cathedral in straight sets, 3-0. In the semi-finals, the Wildcats defeated North Central 3-2, coming from behind 1-2. In the regional round, the Wildcats defeated New Palestine in straight sets before losing to eventual state champion and #1 ranked Avon 1-3. By reaching the Elite Eight, this team went farther than any other team in school history. Along the way, the senior class won the school’s first back-to-back Marion County championship as sophomores and juniors. The Lady Wildcats again played a grueling schedule, facing eight of the top nine ranked teams in Indiana and finished with the fifth toughest schedule in the state per Max Preps.

Senior middle Lauren Matthews became the first Lawrence North volleyball player to be named 1st Team All-State two years in a row. Lauren also garnered both All-County and All-Conference awards for the third straight time, again the first LN volleyball player to achieve this distinction. She capped her senior year by being selected to the Indiana All-Star team, the seventh LN player to achieve that honor. Along with Matthews, senior setter Megan Beasley made the ICGSA All State 1st Team and was also both All-County and All-Conference selections. Sister Lizzie Beasley was named to the All-County team. Beasley sisters Emily ('12), Annie ('14), Meg ('18) and Lizzie ('18) each made the All-County teams, a feat which will be difficult to match. Lauren, Meg and Lizzie were also selected to the inaugural IHSVCA All -District team. Kendall Cole, Mya Whaley, Lizzie and Meg Beasley were named to the prestigious Academic All-State Team.

Four seniors will continue their volleyball careers collegiately. Lauren Matthews will attend Western Kentucky, Meg and Lizzie Beasley will attend University of Toledo and Mya Whaley will attend University of Evansville, all on a full scholarship. Over the past six years, LN volleyball program has graduated thirty-three seniors and nineteen have gone on to play collegiately, twelve at the Division I level.

We bid farewell to seniors Maya Barber, Meg and Lizzie Beasley, Kendal Cole, Lauren Matthews, Shakana Norfleet and Mya Whaley. They leave behind a legacy of an IHSAA sectional championship, two Marion County Championships along with hard work, dedication, team work and loyalty. The senior class started their careers by winning the Freshman Marion County tournament and won a championship in each successive year. .

The Lady Wildcats will return several players from their IHSAA sectional championship roster: Juniors Adrianne Vance, Grace Roembke and Lily Stephenson, sophomores Bethany Dayton, Ashlee Goodpaster and Charity McDowell along with freshman Ashleigh White, Paris McClendon and Serena Dodson. Current JV and freshman team players along with returning varsity players will have an opportunity to fill the void vacated by departing seniors.
